Withey's decision questionable

First off, it is understandable why Jeff Withey made the decision to transfer. Arizona basketball is nothing like it was when he signed his letter of intent. He has no idea who the coach will be or how he will be used in Russ Pennell's offensive system.

First off, it is understandable why Jeff Withey made the decision to transfer. Arizona basketball is nothing like it was when he signed his letter of intent. He has no idea who the coach will be or how he will be used in Russ Pennell's offensive system.

Withey came into Arizona figuring he could be coached by one of the greatest of all time and instead wound up with being coached by a person he probably never heard of one year ago.

He is one of the top players in the country and should be treated as such, rather than being a part of all of this turmoil. If he is good enough to play at a school where problems such as these are limited, we would be hard pressed convincing him to stay.

However, there is also a negative side to this and one that does not make much sense. By transferring, Withey is pretty much guaranteeing that he will sit out for a year. He will be able to work out and get stronger, but it will not have the positive impact on him that playing would have.

Instead of transferring now, Withey could have chosen to play out the season. If he did not like the coach, he could transfer, and more people would understand it. However, he did not leave that as an option, which is intriguing to say the least.

If Arizona hires a big name coach, he will obviously recognize how good Withey is and utilize him to the best of his potential. If a coach is hired that runs an offensive set Withey fits in, the situation could be better than it would have even if Lute Olson was still at Arizona.

There is no denying that Withey is a great player, but his decision seems a little impatient. He could have waited to make a decision instead of rushing to transfer. It is understandable that he wanted out, but many feel it would have been nice if he gave the 'Cats one more chance.
