Win gives reasons to be optimistic

What Arizona Football fan thought they’d ever see the day where the Wildcats win a game by the score of 70-0? Looking back on the game, it seems completely improbable but the historical game really happened, much to the delight of U of A fans on Saturday night.

You want to be cautious about getting optimistic over a win against such a horrific team, but the bottom line is that the Wildcats were awesome on Saturday and gave reason to believe that this could be a very good season.

Willie Tuitama was at his best and showed that he’s poised to have the best season in UA quarterback history. Freshman Matt Scott also did a nice job backing Tuitama up and gave reason to hope for the future.

Running back Nic Grigsby was dominant, seemingly almost breaking away for a touchdown every time he touched the ball. It was by far the most impressive he’s been as a Wildcat.

The offensive line protected Tuitama all night and the wide receivers – save for a couple uncharacteristic drops by Terrell Turner – was very solid all night.

On defense, you had to like the pressure that the line was getting on Idaho all game long. The no sacks in the stat sheet is extremely misleading; the Wildcat linemen were in the Idaho pocket all game long.

It was a pick party in UA’s defensive backfield, as three different Wildcats combined for four interceptions. There were a few dropped interceptions, but you have to expect that with the conditions being so wet.

All in all, it was an outstanding way to start the 2008 football season. Arizona had its best game in years – if not ever, really – and for at least six more days, we can have hope that this will be a special year.

Up next is Toledo, a much better opponent. There’s no reason to think that the Wildcats’ momentum will stop there.
