Defense continues to dominate camp

Day 4 is in the books and it was the same as it has been since the beginning of camp, with the defense being dominant once again. Apai and Vuna Tuihalamaka had interceptions but there were plenty of more highlights to go around.

Vuna and Apai Tuihalamaka both had interceptions and it is apparent that talent obviously runs in the family. Ever since Apai committed, we have been excited to see him grow as a player because he has the frame and work ethic to become an all-conference type of player. Vuna is the same way but is a little more developed than Apai, thus the potential may not be as high as his cousin. Either way, both should see the field plenty this upcoming season.

Many people were disappointed when Earl Mitchell was switched from fullback to defensive tackle, but the move may be paying off. He has not been spectacular, but he is solid enough to get plenty of playing time. Mitchell was always a powerhouse and now the UA can use that side to benefit it on defense, which is something that Mitchell seems capable of doing.

Louis Holmes may have been a top recruit, but he never had the desire and motor to get the job done. Ricky Elmore and Brooks Reed are just the opposite and they certainly look as if they will contribute in a big way. Both players love to hit and the coaches would love nothing more than to see them be able to do just that, as Arizona has not had a good pass rush in quite some time.

Every time Matt Scott makes a mistake, he comes right back and throws a perfect ball or makes a nice read. It is the potential that he continually shows that is making him a player that might see the field more than some may think. Personally, we think he will be entrenched in the rotation for the next four years because he just adds too much to the offense not to be.

Adam Grant’s return from injury looks complete and he should be the starter going into the season. The coaches have always had big plans for him but this could be the first season where he is able to realize the potential that the staff knows he has. If he can stay healthy, Grant will add a stability to the offensive line that most teams would covet.

Arizona will be adding former UNLV commit Lamont Long as a walk on. You have to assume that if Mike Stoops is willing to take him, he must be good. The Wildcats can be picky with the secondary players and it will be interesting to see how much Long is able to contribute.
