Freshman Ron Jackson suffered a leg injury that is most likely a dislocated hip. He went down late in practice and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. If it is a hip dislocation he will not play this season.
The offense was the story in the second day. It was especially apparent in the 7-on-7 drills where the offense seemed to get into a much better rhythm.
After starting the passing drills 2-5, Willie Tuitama hit on his next six attempts and 10 of 12. All told Tuitama took about 80% of the reps.
Tuitama was also solid in 11-on-11 drills, though he had more short completions than he did in the early portion.
When Tuitama was not under center, it was Tyler Lyon getting his first real look of camp. The redshirt freshman was 6-10 in 7-on-7 drills.
"I thought Tyler Lyon did some really good things out there today," said Mike Stoops after practice.
Anthony Johnson continues to be Tuitama’s favorite target. He caught multiple passes in both the 7-on-7 drills and 11-on-11 sessions.
On the defensive side of the ball Louis Holmes was very effective. The senior defensive end had a sack and three hurries.
Devin Ross, Antoine Cason, Wilrey Fontenot and walk-on Tahlako Williams fielded punts, both live and from a JUGS machine.
The most underrated group on the team is the tight ends. It remains to be seen how much they will be used, but it is tough to remember a deeper, more talented group in Tucson. Rob Gronkowski and Travis Bell each had catches, and A.J. Simmons and Brandy McCall should be in the mix as well.
Verbally committed recruit Robert Golden has been on hand both days and fellow recruit Gerell Robinson is expected to be on hand on Saturday.
The Wildcat will have their first closed practice on Saturday. An afternoon practice has been shifted to morning thanks to weather forecasts that suggest afternoon storms.
