Prince leaves the program

There has been speculation about the possible transfer of J.P. Prince for almost as long as the guard has been in Tucson. On Wednesday the speculation ended. The sophomore is leaving Arizona to pursue other options.

A rocky Wildcat career is now over for the Memphis native. He spent some of last season in Lute Olson’s doghouse and never established himself as a part of the Wildcats’ rotation.

He was suspended for a game and only played in 28 games. After the season he openly speculated about a possible transfer, but returned for his second season.

Prince has battled the effects of a virus for some time and the symptoms resurfaced this year. He suited up for the first time since the New Mexico State game on Nov. 19th.

He played in just three games, averaging 1.0 points, 0.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.

“My focus is on getting healthy and maintaining my academics,” said Prince. “The health problems I dealt with last spring have kept me from performing at the level needed here at Arizona. Right now, I just want to get back home and get better physically.”

While there were never any doubts about his ability, Prince was the 27th rated player in the 2005 recruiting class, his work ethic has been called into question.

The irony is that Prince made his decision to leave the team the morning of the Memphis game. The Tigers are the hometown team of the Memphis native.

Prince has not announced what school he will transfer to. He chose Arizona over Vanderbilt back in 2004.

“I want to thank the fans in Tucson and the university for making me a better person and a better student,” Prince said. “I’ve made friends here that will be with me forever, and that includes the coaches and my teammates. I’ve enjoyed my time in Tucson, but it’s just in my best interests for me to get back home.”
