Up and coming big man

Robert Sacre

There aren't many secrets in recruiting, especially among college basketball coaches. Just because even the most ardent fans of recruiting haven't heard of a player, doesn't mean he isn't a highly pursued prospect.

Get ready to hear about Robert Sacre. The big man is a virtual unknown right now, but his combination of athleticism and strength is impressive. He isn't topping any top 100 lists, but he's been hearing from some of the west's best for years. Sacre is a 6-10 post player who currently plays his high school ball at Handsworth Secondary School in North Vancouver, BC. He really came on strong a month ago in Las Vegas and is starting to make a name for himself.

Originally from Louisiana Sacre is now a West Coast guy.

"I am going to stay west," Sacre claimed. "I like the West Coast, it's good. I am originally from Louisiana. I go every summer, but I really think I'll stay out here."

Due to his ties to the state, LSU is on his list but the more likely candidates are Washington, Arizona, Gonzaga, Utah, Oregon State and UCLA.

Sacre contacted Arizona while he was still in eighth grade and thinks highly of the program.

"Lute Olson, right there," Sacre said. "They have a winning record and do well every time in the tournament. Right there gives me a good choice."

Being from Vancouver, he's familiar with Washington.

"Up and coming," He said. "I like Lorenzo (Romar), I went to his summer camp there. He's a great guy, I like him as a coach. I feel a chemistry with the players. I know some of the players there now. It's like a family kind of thing, they treat me real well."

One surprising team on his list is Oregon State.

"They came first," he explained. "My best friend, Derek Potter, he goes there. I go to visit Derek Potter and I play with those guys. I just like the coaching staff and I like how it is an up and coming school. I can see it being an up and coming school that is going to be real good next year and the year after and hopefully the coaches will still be there. I know they will be."

Right now Sacre is just starting to really get into the recruiting scene. Although he has been contacting schools for a few years now, he's just now being able to seriously consider programs.

"I kind of want to make an early decision, but I don't know who," Sacre said. "It's hard, but I know what I'm looking for. I like chemistry between me and my teammates. Liking the coach. I need to like the coach." He is a bit reminiscent of Channing Frye, although he will go to college much more physically developed. He models his game after Chris Bosch and Tyson Chandler and those are decent role models as he can be a similar player. He has nice moves down low and can run the floor. At about 220 pounds he's got some beef on him, which makes him an effective rebounder and defender.

"He has a very good body, and likes to bang and use his strength," said West Coast recruiting analyst Greg Hicks. "He's relatively athletic, while his skills are still developing. Sacre has a real chance to be a high major prospect."

Right now he doesn't have much of a reputation, but that should change. Sacre has all the tools to be a top tier player and the teams that are on his list seem to confirm that.
