It sounds like it would have been a great basketball game, but Syracuse and UNC turned out to be one heck of a football game. The Orangemen prevailed 49-47 in 3OT. Carolina answered Syracuse’s touchdown in the third overtime, but the Tar Heels’ two-point conversion attempt failed. RUNNER UP: Miami’s come from behind win over Florida. The Canes scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to win 38-33.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
Wake Forest is 2-0 after beating North Carolina State 38-24. They beat a pretty good Boston College team last week. RUNNERS UP: BC, who beat Penn State in Happy Valley, Miami and South Carolina who shocked a solid Virginia squad.
UPSET OF THE WEEK
Bowling Green 27, Purdue 16. The Falcons are one of the best teams in the MAC, but no one expected them to go into West Lafayette and beat the Boilermakers.
PLAY OF THE WEEK
Will Allen’s 100-yard interception return not only gave Ohio State their only touchdown but it stopped a San Diego State drive inside the Buckeyes’ 10-yard line. RUNNER UP: Washington State’s Sammy Moore’s one-handed catch to send their game to overtime.
Walter Reyes, RB, Syracuse. Reyes rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns in the Orangemen’s 3OT win over UNC. He had a 25-yard TD run on the first play of the second overtime.
Bradlee Van Pelt, QB, Colorado State. Van Pelt makes the list for the second week in a row. He was 15-of-23 for 317 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 60 yards.
Josh Harris, QB, Bowling Green. Harris was 22-40 for 357 yards and three touchdowns.
Anthony Davis, RB, Wisconsin. Davis had 247 yards rushing and three scores.
Lee Evans, WR, Wisconsin. Evans had 214 yards on just nine receptions. He had two scores, including a 99 yarder.
Auburn was ranked No. 1 by a few preseason polls but is now 0-2. Penn State struggled with Temple and was dominated by Boston College. Maryland was a preseason top-15 club, but has dropped their first two games.
Ohio State needed a great defensive play to overcome a pesky San Diego State team. Tennessee had their hands full with Marshall.
EYEING THE HEISMAN?
Michigan State’s Jeff Smoker has thrown for over 300 yards and six TD’s in each of the first two games. If he can do this against better competition he could be a contender… Philip Rivers had over 400 yards passing in a loss. If the Wolfpack can beat some good teams he could vault into consideration.
Mississippi was marching down the field when Eli Manning threw a perfect strike to receiver Taye Biddle. Biddle dropped the sure touchdown and the drive stalled. Memphis scored on the ensuing drive and won the game.
