Dunn won't suit for Cats

The Wildcat basketball team was dealt a huge blow when it was announced today that redshirt freshman Chris Dunn has left school and will no longer compete for the Arizona basketball program. His departure leaves Arizona with just three post players on scholarship.

Reasons for Dunn’s departure were not officially revealed by the University, but sources close to the situation indicate that academics are the reason for his departure. At this time it looks like he will enroll at Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona. It is not known when, or if Dunn will return to the Arizona program.

Dunn is the third post player to leave the team since March. Dennis Latimore left the team prior to the NCAA Tournament and later transferred to Notre Dame. Incoming freshman Ndudi Ebi signed a letter of intent, but chose to enter the NBA Draft instead.

His absence gives the Wildcats just three post players on the roster, only two of whom have NCAA experience. Juniors Channing Frye and Isaiah Fox will be counted on more now than ever. Frye was the starter for most of last season, while Fox saw his playing time dwindle as the season moved along. Incoming freshman Kirk Walters was expected to be a contributor this season, but his presence is now vital for the Wildcats. The 6-10 freshman will have to log serious minutes. Expect sophomore wing Andre Iduodala to see time at the four. Though undersized, Iguodala has good strength and great leaping ability.

The Cats pursued Baylor big man Lawrence Roberts, but the 6-9 power forward chose to transfer to Mississippi State instead. Roberts was cleared by the NCAA to play right away and he would have been a key player for the Cats.

Dunn redshirtted last season after starring at Hobbs High School in Hobbs, NM. He averaged 17.4 points, 12.3 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game as a high school senior in 2001-02. He worked hard this summer to bulk up and would have been the first post player off the bench this season.
