It’s been a foregone conclusion for many that Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian 2014 quarterback Brandon Dawkins would redshirt his first year.
However, he is planning to arrive to Arizona with the belief that he can compete.
“I’m training like I could play early,” Dawkins said. "I will be able to work out with the coaches for two hours a week. That doesn’t sound like a big deal, but when you are adjusting to a whole different way of life it is important.”
Dawkins has also been working on getting physically ready for college.
“I’ve put on a few pounds of muscle," he said. "The goal is to kind of stay around 205 or so. The good thing is that the strength coaches really know what they’re doing, so they will closely monitor my weight and have a good idea of where my best weight is.”
Either way, don’t expect Dawkins to become overwhelmed by collegiate competition.
“Playing at the high school I came from was a big advantage for me," Dawkins said. "We run a very similar system to what Arizona runs and I got to play against really good guys all the time.
"Plus my quarterback skills were able to develop there. I became an all around quarterback there. You see a lot of guys who can run or throw, but can’t do both. I feel I can do both.”
