Richardson to the Steelers

Shaquille Richardson

Shaquille Richardson went to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 5th round. Read on for more.

With the 157th pick in the NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers took cornerback Shaquille Richardson. It is not necessarily a surprise that Richardson was drafted, but he certainly came a long way from a few years ago when people did not even want him to start for Arizona.

Richardson battled some injury issues and entered this past season healthy, thus making it easier for him to play up to his full potential and get attention from numerous teams throughout the league.

The Steelers were just one of the teams that brought in Richardson for an interview in the past month or so and the Arizona corner felt that his interview with Pittsburgh went very well.

The Steelers have been looking for a reliable corner the past few years, as Richardson becomes the third cornerback in the past five drafts to be taken by the Steelers in the fifth round, following Terry Hawthorne last year and Crezdon Butler in 2010.

In addition, the Steelers took Cortez Allen in the fourth round in 2011 and Curtis Brown in the third round that same year.

The issue here is that Allen is the only one still on the roster and although Brown saw the field, he did not do so with any production. We would be surprised if Richardson started for the Steelers in the next few years, but there is definitely an opportunity to play. Recommended Stories
