It was never supposed to be easy, but Arizona did enough to defeat Utah 67-63 on the road Wednesday.
Brandon Taylor started with a bucket and Nick Johnson matched it. Dakarai Tucker then made a three-pointer and Johnson matched it. Delon Wright proceeded to make a three and a bucket by Kaleb Tarczewski cut the lead to 8-7 with just under 16 minutes left in the first half.
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson got on the board, but Wright answered right back. Princeton Onwas got consecutive baskets, as a jumper by T.J. McConnell made it a three-point deficit with 11:29 left in the first frame.
Dallin Bachynski scored, but Johnson made two free-throws. Aaron Gordon then went one of two from the line before Matt Korcheck got a layup. McConnell made a jumper and Gabe York made a three before a steal and a layup by York forced a Utah timeout with the Wildcats up 23-16.
York scored again as Taylor matched and Bachynski added a bucket of his own. Tarczewski made two free-throws and York hit a three. Bachynski and McConnell then exchanged baskets before Bachynski scored again and a three by Hollis-Jefferson put Arizona up 35-24. Onwas scored shortly before the half ended as Arizona led 35-26 at the half.
Tarczewski got on the board to start the half and Taylor and York then matched threes. Wright and Taylor proceeded to score, but Gordon and Hollis-Jefferson did the same. After a free-throw by Wright, McConnell hit a jumper and a shot by Olsen brought the Utes within 46-36.
Kenneth Ogbe made two free-throws before Olsen and Ahmad Fields made a shot to force Arizona to call timeout only up four with ten minutes left.
Gordon scored as Fields quickly responded. Tarczewski made two free-throws and McConnell then hit a basket. However, Wright scored and after two free-throws by Bachynski, Taylor made a three that brought Utah within 52-51 with 4:31 left in the half.
Loveridge made two free-throws and Johnson made a basket. After a shot by Loveridge, Johnson once again matched it. He then made a free-throw soon after and the game was tied with 22.8 seconds left and Arizona’s possession, but McConnell missed and it headed to overtime.
Hollis-Jefferson made two free-throws to start the overtime period, but Loveridge did the same. Hollis-Jefferson then made consecutive hoops as Wright came back with two free-throws. Johnson was fouled with 22 seconds left and proceeded to make both attempts.
Bachynski scored to cut it to two and McConnell then went one of two from the line to extend the lead to three. After Taylor made a free-throw, Johnson made two more to seal the victory.
