Arizona's win over Arizona State was about as easy as expected as the Wildcats defeated the Sun Devils 91-68 Thursday night at McKale.
Nick Johnson hit a three to start the game and Jordan Bachynski made a free-throw. Shaquille McKissic tied the game at three, but Gordon scored and hit a free-throw to put the Wildcats up 6-3 with 15:43 left in the first half.
Kaleb Tarczewski made two free-throws before Eric Jacobsen scored. Gordon added a bucket and Brandon Ashley made two from the line. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson proceeded to score, but was matched by two free-throws by McKissic. A three by Gabe York then gave the Wildcats a 17-7 lead with 11:45 left.
McKissic made one of two from the line out of a timeout, but Johnson scored. Tarczewski then did the same and a three by T.J. McConnell put Arizona up 24-8 with about ten minutes left in the half.
Tarczewski scored and Jahii scored his first points of the game at the line. Hollis-Jefferson made one of two from the line, as a Gordon free-throw extended the lead to 28-10. Carson scored, but Johnson’s three gave him 1,000 points in his career.
A Tarczewski basket was answered by two free-throws by Jacobsen. Hollis-Jefferson then scored and a three-point play by Carson cut the UA lead to 35-17 with about five minutes left in the half.
York proceeded to hit a three before Brandon Kearney did the same. Hollis-Jefferson made a free-throw and Carson and Gilling made two each. After a score by Gordon, Gilling hit a three and a free-throw by Bo Barnes cut Arizona’s lead to 42-28 at the half.
Johnson and McConnell scored consecutive baskets to begin the half before Carson got a bucket. Gordon, Ashley, and McConnell then scored as Arizona took a 52-30 lead less than five minutes into the half.
Barnes made a free-throw, but Gordon came back and scored. After a basket by Carson, Tarczewski scored. Carson matched it and Richie Edwards hit a three, as a shot from behind the arc by McConnell and bucket by Ashley soon after put the Wildcats up 61-38 with 11:49 left.
After a free-throw by McKissic, Hollis-Jefferson scored. McKissic then scored again and Tarczewski did the same. Jacobsen made two free-throws and Carson got a three-point play, but Gordon and Ashley scored consecutive hoops. McKissic scored yet again and two free-throws by Barnes cut it to a 19-point game. However, Ashley came back and scored to hold Arizona’s lead at 71-50 with under eight minutes left.
Johnson and Carson exchanged baskets before Johnson made two from the line. Barnes then hit a three, but Gordon scored again as Arizona led 77-55 with a little over four minutes left and cruised the rest of the way.
