McConnell continues to be ideal teammate

T.J. McConnell

Sean Miller and his players continue to compliment T.J, McConnell. Read on to see what Miller says makes him so special, how McConnell approaches games, and more.

It's no secret that one of the reasons why Arizona is off to the fast start this season is because of the play of point guard T.J. McConnell.

Whether it is Sean Miller or numerous players, McConnell has received compliments from the first game of the season until now.

"One of the great characteristics of T.J. is that he doesn't worry about himself a whole lot," Miller said. "He is really team centered as evidenced by the number of shots he takes per game, the way he plays the game, the way he practices every day."

It has been noticeable that the current Wildcats are happy to play with McConnell, as he makes it his duty to get them the ball.

"He is a great teammate," Miller said. "He is somebody where if you are a part of our team, you want to play with him because he cares so much about what you want a point guard to care about and that's distributing the ball and winning."

That does not mean that McConnell does not have room for improvement. Miller has consistently mentioned that he would like to see him be more aggressive at times, especially when the opposition is daring him to.

"I will say that moving forward there's a number of things you always want to get better at," Miller said. "T.J. is too good of a three-point shooter to not shoot one or two. It's in our best interest that he takes the open three.

"He has become so consumed about making the one more pass and looking for his teammates that sometimes what he does not realize is the other team is kind of taking him for granted."

McConnell is one of the leaders on Arizona, but does not necessarily do it the conventional route of yelling at his teammates or being vocal.

"I just try to lead by example in practice," he said. "I might not be a rah-rah guy, but I lead by example and show how hard I work. I give people the ball and I don't really care about scoring. I try to make others happy and I think that helps our team mesh well."

He is hoping that attitude will help carry him and his teammates to a successful Pac-12 season.

"It's a whole other level," McConnell said of the conference. "Every team is so familiar with what we do that it makes it that much harder focus. We have to concentrate more in practice and then it will translate to the game. I think we have to take it one practice at a time and give it 100 percent in practice and then translate it to the game.

"I am excited because the Pac-12 is a very good conference and this is my first year obviously playing in it. I know I am excited myself and my team is excited to start conference play."
