Arizona was sharp on both sides of the ball on Tuesday night as it defeated Texas Tech 79-58 at McKale.
Arizona Brandon Ashley started the scoring and Aaron Gordon followed with a three. Ashley then scored another bucket, as Gordon added a free-throw and a dunk to force a timeout up 10-0 with 16:15 left in the first half.
Kader Tapsoba ended the scoring drought out of the timeout and a free-throw by Toddrick Gotcher cut the lead to seven. However, Gabe York hit a three the next time down court to bring the lead back to 13-3 with 13:31 left in the half.
Jamal Williams made two free-throws and Jordan Tolbert also scored as Arizona’s lead fell to five about a minute later. Rondae Jefferson got his first basket of the game and Dejan Kravic matched it before Gordon scored again and Arizona went into a timeout up 17-10 with 10:49 left in the half.
Gordon made one of two from the line and Ashley scored five consecutive points before Jaye Crockett hit a three. A dunk by Tapsoba then forced a timeout with Arizona up 23-15 with 6:50 left in the first half.
Tapsoba completed the three-point play out of the timeout and Crockett scored a minute or so later to cut the lead to five. Gordon and Robert Turner proceeded to make one of two from the line and Arizona’s lead held at five with 4:29 left.
Nick Johnson made a three and after a basket by Aaron Ross, hit another that put the Wildcats up 30-21 a minute and a half later.
Hollis-Jefferson proceeded to make two from the line and Johnson made a three soon after. Crockett then made a jumper and two free-throws by Randy Onwuasor put Arizona’s lead at 35-25 going into the half.
Ashley and Tarczewski started the half with buckets before Turner scored for tech. However, Gordon scored and Johnson hit a three off a turnover to push Arizona’s lead to 44-27 with 17:15 left in regulation.
Johnson hit a free-throw and Ashley made two before Tapsoba scored a basket. After a score by Turner, Gordon and Ross exchanged hoops, as McConnell hit a three soon after to bring Arizona’s lead to 52-33 with 14:07 left in regulation.
Ross made two free-throws and Hollis-Jefferson followed with one before Crockett and Johnson exchanged baskets. After a basket by Gordon, Ross came down the court and scored quickly, but Ashley made a three to put Arizona up 60-39 with 9:35 left in the half.
Ross and Crockett scored consecutive baskets to force an Arizona timeout with the Wildcats up 60-43 with 9:08 left in the half. Onwuasor and Gordon then exchanged two points each and another timeout was called less than two minutes later.
Tapsoba made two free-throws out of the timeout, but York followed with a score of his own. Onwuasor answered, as one free-throw by Johnson extended the Arizona lead to 65-49 with 6:07 left in regulation.
Hollis-Jefferson made two from the line and Onwuasor responded with one. Tapsoba scored a basket, as Johnson made two free-throws and Tapsoba scored again to cut Arizona’s lead to 69-54 with 5:01 left.
Two free-throws by Hollis-Jefferson extended the lead to 17 and two more by Ashley put the game away with four minutes left.
