It may have just been an exhibition, but Arizona had numerous players stand out in Monday's 84-52 win over Augustana.
Daniel Jansen scored consecutive buckets to put Augustana State up 4-0 before T.J. McConnell got Arizona on the board. Jansen then hit a three-pointer, but Nick Johnson matched. Johnson then hit two free-throws, but Devin Gilligan scored shortly after before a free-throw by Kaleb Tarczewski cut the Augustana lead to 9-8 with about 16 minutes left in the first half. Casey Schilling and McConnell proceeded to exchange three-pointers as Arizona went into the first timeout down 12-11.
McConnell gave Arizona the lead out of the timeout and Brandon Ashley and Gabe York followed with buckets to force a timeout and put the Wildcats up 17-12 with 12:02 left in the first half.
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scored his first points of the game with one of two free-throws and Aaron Gordon and Johnson followed with baskets. However, Augustana answered with a bucket by Matthew Brazendale and Jansen to bring the Vikings within six. McConnell scored again and was followed by Gordon, as a dunk by Johnson forced a timeout with Arizona up 28-16 with 7:02 left in the half.
Schilling scored and hit a free-throw before Ashley and Jordin Mayes got to the line for four points. York proceeded to hit a three and Jansen answered with a bucket, as Tarczewski matched it and kept Arizona’s lead at 37-23. Yuriy Malashenko then hit a three with about four minutes left in the half to bring Augustana within 11.
Malashenko scored out of the timeout, but Gordon hit a three the next time down court. McConnell added one of his own and Tarczewski scored on a break to put Arizona up 45-28 less than a minute later. Jansen stopped the run with one of two free-throws and Malashenko added a three to cut the lead to 14 going into the half.
Ashley started the second half with a dunk and Tarczewski added a free-throw, but Jansen picked up a three-point play and Malashenko hit his fourth three of the night. Tarczewski scored the next time down court to put Arizona up 51-38 before Schilling made a free-throw with about 16 minutes left in the second half.
York proceeded to score seven straight, including a three-pointer, before Evan Pierce broke it up for Augustana. Hollis-Jefferson responded with two free-throws and Johnson added a basket to put Arizona up 62-41 with a little over 11 minutes left.
York scored yet again, but Ben Shellim hit a three soon after. Hollis-Jefferson made one of two free-throws and Johnson added basket before Hollis-Jefferson added two at the line. After a Mayes layup, Tarczewski made two from the charity stripe to put Arizona up 73-44 with 8:20 left. An exchange of baskets kept Arizona’s lead at 75-47 with 7:35 left in regulation.
Shortly after, Elliott Pitts scored his first point of the game on a three and Hollis-Jefferson got a dunk as Arizona went up 82-50 with a little over two minutes left.
