The third game between Arizona and UCLA was everything it was hyped up to be, but Arizona fell short 66-64 on Friday.
Mark Lyons and Shabazz Muhammad exchanged baskets to start the game, as Kaleb Tarczewski then gave Arizona the quick 4-2 lead. Travis Wear then scored consecutive buckets before Tarczewski added a free-throw and a three-pointer by Nick Johnson put Arizona up 8-6 with 14:53 left in the first half.
After a basket by Kyle Anderson, Brandon Ashley came up with a three-point play to give Arizona the 11-8 lead with just under 14 minutes left in the half. Jordan Adams and Johnson exchanged baskets followed by an exchange from Norman Powell and Ashley. That was proceeded by matched buckets from Travis Wear and Ashley again, as Arizona led 17-14 with 10:22 left.
David Wear then got on the board, but Grant Jerrett responded with a three-pointer from the corner. Norman Powell came down and hit a jumper and Hill scored his first points of the game on a three-pointer that gave Arizona the 23-18 lead with just over six minutes left in the half. A three-pointer by Hill extended that lead to eight, but Adams made two of three free-throws to get the bruins within 26-20 with 4:27 left.
After two free-throws by Adams, Travis Wear was able to dunk it in. Johnson then hit two free-throws and Ashley scored before Anderson got a bucket off an offensive rebound and Arizona went into halftime up 30-26.
Hill opened the second half with a layup and shortly after, Lyons hit a three from the top of the key to force UCLA to take timeout down 35-26 with 18:12 left in the second half. After a free-throw by Travis Wear, Tarczewski picked up a bucket. Adams then proceeded to make a free-throw before Anderson hit a jumper. Jerrett and David Wear exchanged baskets shortly after as Arizona led 39-32 with 14:35 left.
Muhammad and Lyons exchanged baskets before Lyons got in the paint and scored one of his own. After an Ashley dunk, David Wear nailed a three to cut Arizona’s lead to 43-36 with 11:46 left in the half. Lyons and Anderson proceeded to exchange baskets, but Ashley and Lyons made consecutive ones to give Arizona a 49-38 lead with a little over ten minutes left.
The Bruins then went on a run with two free-throws by Adams, a basket by Muhammad, and a three-point play by him as well as UCLA cut it to 49-45 with less than nine minutes left. A jumper by Adams shortly after forced Sean Miller to call timeout with the Wildcats only leading by two.
A Lyons dunk increased the UA lead to four and Kevin Parrom scored his first points of the game with two free-throws to give the Wildcats a 53-47 lead with 7:06 left. Two consecutive baskets by Adams then brought the Bruins within 53-51 with 5:26 left before a three-pointer by Johnson at the end of the shot clock extended it back to five.
However, Adams came back and made a three of his own. Sean Miller then got called for a technical and the two free-throws tied the game with 4:37 left. A dunk by Hill gave Arizona back its two-point lead before Adams came down and scored to tie it back up.
Two free-throws by Muhammad gave the Bruins a two-point lead, but Ashley hit a jumper the next time down court to tie it with a little over two minutes left. Travis Wear was able to hit two free-throws soon after to put the Bruins back up two, as Tarczewski made one of two to put Arizona within one with 1:41 left.
Adams proceeded to get to the line and make both attempts, but Jerrett hit a three-pointer with under a minute to go that tied the game at 64. An offensive rebound by Anderson gave UCLA the 66-64 lead with 22 seconds left and a jumper by Hill fell short, as the Bruins got the win.
