Arizona was looking for revenge on Thursday and found it with an 79-69 win over Colorado to advance to the next round of the Pac-12 tournament.
Spencer Dinwiddie and Kaleb Tarczewski exchanged baskets to start the game before Nick Johnson and Solomon Hill scored to give Arizona an early 6-2 lead. Xavier Johnson then proceeded to score and a shot by Askia Booker tied it up. After Mark Lyons and Andre Roberson shared baskets, a Nick Johnson three gave Arizona the 11-8 lead with 14:53 left in the first half.
Grant Jerrett scored out of the timeout, but Xavier Johnson responded with a three-pointer. Jordin Mayes then matched that three and Brandon Ashley scored consecutive buckets to open up a 20-11 Arizona lead. Roberson then proceeded to come up with a layup to cut Arizona’s lead to 20-13 with 11:38 left in the first half.
After two free-throws by Ashley, sabatino chen scored his first points of the game followed by two more from Josh Scott. A Nick Johnson free-throw put Arizona up 23-17 with 7:45, but CU got one of its own at the line as well. Mayes and Roberson exchanged baskets and after a Jeremy Adams free-throw, Lyons made a three to give the UA a 28-21 lead with under four minutes left.
Jerrett made a three-pointer out of a timeout, as Booker hit two free-throws the next time down court. Angelo Chol matched them with a layup, but Dinwiddie scored the next time down court. Dinwiddie then added one of two free-throws to cut Arizona’s lead to 33-26 with 1:56 left in the half.
Hill also proceeded to make one of two from the line and John made two as well to put Arizona up 36-26 with 1:21 left in the half. Soon after Roberson scored off an offensive rebound, Hill was able to end the first half with a three-point play as Arizona led 39-28 going into halftime.
Roberson started the half by going one of two from the free-throw line, but Hill made a layup the next time down court. Booker then made a three-pointer and Dinwiddie nailed two free-throws to pull the Buffs within 41-34 with 18:38 left in the second half.
Nick Johnson proceeded to make a three and after a Roberson score, Johnson came up with a three-point play that was followed by a nice assist to Lyons, as another score by Roberson put Arizona’s lead at 49-38 with 15:36 left in the second half.
After an exchange of baskets, a three-pointer by Mayes extended Arizona’s lead to 54-40 with a little over 12 minutes left. Dinwiddie was able to get to the line and Xavier Talton hit a basket before a Dinwiddie three-pointer cut Arizona’s lead to 54-47 with 10:09 left.
Arizona quickly stopped any CU momentum with a shot by Tarczewski and a three by Kevin Parrom to put the UA lead back up to 59-47 with 8:57 left. Two free-throws by Dinwiddie made it a ten-point game and Xavier Johnson added two of his own to come within eight with 7:31 left. Dinwiddie and Nick Johnson exchanged baskets before Xavier Johnson made two free-throws to make it 61-55 with 5:18 left.
Parrom and Talton matched baskets before Hill hit a three with about four minutes left. However, Jeremy Adams made a three of his own and Arizona led 66-60 with 4:02 left in regulation. Xavier Johnson made a layup out of a timeout to make it a four-point game, but Ashley scored the next time down court.
Dinwiddie got to the line once again and made both free-throws before Lyons and Booker exchanged threes with under two minutes left. Roberson drew a foul with 1:03 left and made both free-throws to pull within 71-69.
Johnson was able to score soon after and a foul on CU have the Wildcats the ball back with 28 seconds left. Lyons was fouled with 23 seconds left and made both of them to extend the lead to 75-69 as two more from Jerrett sealed the win.
