Although Arizona have a better effort, the rematch had the same result as the first game between Arizona and UCLA, as the Bruins won at home 74-69 Saturday night.
Mark Lyons started the scoring off with a layup, but Shabazz Muhammad responded with a three-pointer. After two free-throws by Kaleb Tarczewski, Travis Wear scored on an offensive rebound and it was followed by a basket from Kyle Anderson and Muhammad to put the Bruins up 9-4 with 15:19 left in the first half.
Lyons made two free-throws out of a timeout, but Anderson scored four consecutive points. Hill answered with a layup and after a three-pointer by Kevin Parrom, a basket by Tarczewski forced Ben Howland to take timeout with the game tied at 13 and 12 minutes left in the half. However, Travis Wear and Norman Powell scored consecutive baskets to go up four.
A three-pointer by Jordan Adams put the lead at seven before a Lyons layup brought it back to five with 11 minutes left. After a long two by Larry Drew, Lyons responded with a three and Nick Johnson hit a jumper. David Wear and Jordin Mayes then exchanged three-pointers as the Bruins led 25-23 with just under eight minutes left.
Muhammad hit a free-throw out of the timeout, but Mayes hit a runner the next time down court. Mayes then fouled Adams, allowing him to make three free-throws and put the Bruins up 29-25 with about six minutes left in the half. Lyons and Hill then scored consecutive hoops to tie the game, but a three-point play by Anderson put the Bruins up three with about four minutes left.
Anderson scored again, but Grant Jerrett hit a three-pointer that was followed by a bucket from Parrom. However, Anderson scored his seventh straight point to put the Bruins up 36-34 with a few minutes left in the first half. Anderson then scored yet again to put the Bruins up four before Mayes knocked down a jumper. A basket by Drew ended the half with the Bruins up 40-36.
Johnson started the half with a dunk for Arizona, but consecutive baskets from Muhammad and David Wear forced Sean Miller to call timeout with Arizona down 44-38 less than three minutes into the second half. After a bad shot by Lyons, Drew made a three-pointer to extend the lead to nine before a jumper by David Wear extended it to 49-38. A three-point play by Muhammad put the Bruins up 14 and Arizona found itself in trouble.
Jerrett and Drew exchanged three-pointers before Johnson got one off an offensive rebound. However, Travis Wear hit an open jumper before Jerrett made two from the line. A free-throw by Parrom brought the score to single digits with about 12 minutes left, but Anderson scored the next time down court. Back-to-back three-pointers from Parrom and Johnson brought Arizona to within six before Mayes made one of two free-throws with nine minutes left.
Muhammad proceeded to make a three to put the Bruins up eight, but Tarczewski came back with a dunk. Drew hit a layup out of a timeout and David Wear hit a three-pointer to extend the lead to 11 before Lyons made a layup the next time down court. Drew scored again on a goal-tending call, but Hill matched it with one of two free-throws with about five minutes left.
After a Muhammad free-throw, Hill came up with a layup to bring Arizona within nine with a little under four minutes left. Parrom proceeded to make two free-throws and Jerrett added a three-pointer to bring Arizona within four. A jumper by Muhammad extended the lead to six before a three-pointer by Jerrett brought the Wildcats within three. After a UCLA turnover, Arizona got the ball with 24 seconds left, but Lyons missed a jumper and Muhammad proceeded to make both of his free-throws to seal the game.
