Arizona struggles in loss

Arizona lost to USC on Wednesday night. Read on for a complete recap of how it happened.

Arizona played one of its worst games of the season on both sides of the ball as it fell to USC 89-78 on Wednesday night.

Eric Wise started the game with a three-point play before Kaleb Tarczewski scored on a dunk. Byron Wesley matched it and Kevin Parrom hit a three-pointer the next time down court. Wise then hit two consecutive baskets, but Parrom his another three and Solomon Hill added one of his own to put Arizona up 11-10 with 15:23 left.

Mark Lyons made a free-throw to put Arizona up two before J.T. Terrell tied the game at 12. Hill came up with a three-point play the next time down court, but Wesley hit a layup to bring the Trojans with one with over 12 minutes left in the first half. Omar Oraby then gave USC the lead, but Grant Jerrett proceeded to make a three-pointer to give the Wildcats the two-point lead.

Wesley then scored five points in a row to give USC the 21-18 lead and force Sean Miller to call timeout with just over ten minutes left. Jerrett scored out of the timeout, but Wise came right back for two. Johnson was able to come up with a layup to bring Arizona within one, but Wise scored again to extend the USC lead.

James Blasczyk made a shot to put the Trojans up 27-22 and Jio Fontan hit a three in transition as Arizona found itself down 30-22. Johnson scored a bucket, but Oraby answered it. Tarczewski and Terrell exchanged baskets before Hill got one of his own. Fontan then hit a three and after a layup by Hill, Wesley's three gave USC a 40-30 lead with just under three minutes left in the first half.

Lyons proceeded to make two free-throws, but Aaron Fuller scored in the paint. Lyons then made a free-throw, Hill a layup, and Lyons another free-throw to cut USC's lead to 42-36 at the half.

The Trojans started the half with buckets from Dedmon and Fontan that forced Sean Miller to call timeout with Arizona down 10. After two free-throws by Hill, Terrell hit a three and Fontan made a three-point play to put USC up 51-38 with 17:31 left. Two free-throws by Lyons brought Arizona within 11 and Brandon Ashley's jumper was followed by a layup from Parrom to make it 51-44 and force USC to call timeout.

Wise was able to come back to score and Tarczewski matched it with two from the line. Terrell scored the next time down court, but Parrom did the same for Arizona. Fuller proceeded to score and Jerrett picked up a dunk with under 15 minutes to go as USC led 57-50.

Wise made a free-throw and Fuller a layup to put the Trojans up 10, but a Parrom three-pointer brought the Wildcats within seven with 13:13 left. Jordin Mayes hit a three-pointer from the corner to bring Arizona to within four points, but Fuller hit a jumper to go back up six. Lyons responded with two free-throws with 11:48 as Arizona remained within striking distance.

However, Fuller made an open jumper and Wise made two free-throws as the Trojans went right back up to leading by eight. A three-pointer by Terrell brought the lead to 11 and Hill made a layup to put it back in single digits. Fontan made a jumper as the shot clock expired the next time down court to give USC the 11-point lead with about eight minutes left.

A three-pointer by Jerrett out of a timeout put the UA within eight, but Wise scored to bring it back to double digits. Tarczewski scored on an offensive rebound, but Wise scored one again to keep the Trojans up double digits. Parrom scored the next time down court and made one of two free-throws to come within seven.

Fuller made two from the free-throw line and Hill was able to make one of two the next time down court. Hill got fouled again shortly after and proceeded to make both as USC led 77-71 with a little over three minutes left. However, Wesley got fouled when USC got the ball back and also made both of his free-throws as SC cruised for the rest of the game.
