John Idzik to become Jets new GM

With personnel issues across the board, the Jets took a first major step toward rebuilding for 2013. Newly hired general manager John Idzik is chomping at the bit to get to work in the Big Apple.

After two weeks, ten different candidates and endless hours spent in interview rooms, the New York Jets finally announced the hiring of John Idzik to direct their front office. The Jets were the last of five NFL teams to fill their vacant general manager position, conducting a thorough interview process led by executive search firm Korn/ Ferry. Idzik, who spent the past six seasons as Seattle's vice president of football administration, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to a Jets team seeking to retool its roster and return to championship contention.

"During his two decades in the NFL, John helped build a Super Bowl championship team in Tampa Bay, an NFC championship team in Arizona and, most recently, a team in Seattle that narrowly missed reaching the NFC championship game," noted Jets owner Woody Johnson. "John has seen first-hand what's necessary to construct a winning team and has worked with some of the most innovative and successful coaches in the NFL, including Pete Carroll, Tony Dungy, Dennis Green, Jon Gruden and Mike Holmgren. Drawing on 20 years of NFL experience, John, working with Rex, will get the Jets where all of us want to be."

While Idzik's resume speaks for itself, the Jets find themselves in uncharted waters facing a hellish salary cap situation, a roster devoid of quality depth and major contract negotiations on the horizon. With the unenviable task of transforming the circus-like Jets into a feared opponent, Idzik is embracing the challenge ahead of him.

"I am honored and extremely excited to be joining the New York Jets," said Idzik. "It has been very enlightening getting to know Mr. Woody Johnson, Rex Ryan and Neil Glat and I am very grateful for them making me feel very welcomed as a member of the Jets family. I am eager to get started building on the foundation that is already in place."

Jets owner and CEO Woody Johnson announced that an introductory press conference will be held for Idzik on Thursday, January 24, at 11am.
