Arizona may be losing, but its commitments remains solid. Read on for Jarrell Bennett's thoughts on the program, his commitment, and more.

While Arizona has struggled to begin the 2011 campaign, one area that continues to produce and stand out is the wide receiver position. It’s an area that UA players have continuously excelled in since the inception of the spread offense.

One player from the 2012 class that is scheduled to arrive on campus next year is wide receiver commit Jarrell Bennett from New Orleans Edna Karr. The 5-foot-10, 155-pound receiver committed to UA in August and has ignored inquiries from other schools since then.

“I haven’t been talking to anyone,” Bennett said. “People email me but I never read them.”

Despite the Wildcats’ rough start, Bennett isn’t too worried about where the program is headed. He sees similarities between his current school and the college he is committed to.

“We are in the same predicament,” Bennett said. “Our season, we are trying to turn it around because we are in the same predicament. It isn’t how you start; it’s how you finish the year.”

Arizona has become a program known for its spread offense and ability to get several wide receivers involved. Bennett likes the system UA runs and believes it is comparable to what they run at Edna Karr.

“It’s pretty similar to our offense,” Bennett said. “I think I would fit pretty well in the spread offense because we run the spread where we’re at. In college I think I will fit pretty well in the scheme they run.”

Bennett is especially excited with how often UA gets its playmakers involved on offense.

“We buy into the type of offense that Arizona runs,” Bennett said. “I knew I was going to Arizona because they like getting their playmakers the ball. That’s really why I chose Arizona.”

The product from New Orleans was recruited by receivers coach Garrett Chachere. Bennett has been able to connect well with Chachere, who is from Louisiana as well.

“It’s pretty good because he’s from down here,” Bennett said. “When I talk to him we’re fine and he told me he would take care of me like if I was his own. He said he likes the type of player I am. A lot of schools wouldn’t offer me because I am 5-foot-10, 155 pounds. I am grateful to Arizona for taking a chance. I think they are getting a great player.”

Bennett has also been able to communicate with Arizona head coach Mike Stoops since making his commitment.

“I have talked to him twice and we have a good relationship,” Bennett said.

Louisiana is SEC country and most players from that region want to play in that conference. The fact that Bennett will play in the Pac-12 hasn’t ruffled the feathers of those around him as they feel the conference is appropriate for his skill set.

“Actually they told me it was a perfect fit for me,” Bennett said.

Over the past couple of years, UA has done well recruiting the state of Louisiana; landing defensive backs Jonathan McKnight and Cortez Johnson in consecutive classes. That really didn’t have much of a factor on Bennett’s decision though as he was more attracted to the scheme the Wildcats run on offense.

“Not really,” Bennett said. “I like the offense they run. They’ll go five wide. That really played a part in me coming to Arizona. I had to go to a place that fits me and Arizona fits me with the spread offense and I think I will fit perfectly in the scheme.”

Numerous wideouts have come into UA’s offense and experienced success in the spread offense. Bennett believes he is one of the next successful receivers at Arizona and could develop into a player other defenses must account for.

“I think I will give them another explosive receiver to account for in the slot,” Bennett said. “I think the opponent will have to account for me week in and week out.”

With the Wildcats starting the season at 1-4 many will question the impact that has on recruiting. Bennett doesn’t have any plans to go elsewhere and he is excited to get away from home.

“Arizona has me and I think I am going to say there," Bennett said. "I want to be away from home so I am going to stay with Arizona.”
