Safety close to a decision

Chanceller James

Spring Valley (Calif.) Steele Canyon High School safety Chanceller James is going to be taking visits the next two weeks and could be close to a decision. Read on to see where he is visiting, what his timetable is, and more.

In several interviews this summer with Scout.com, Spring Valley (Calif.) Steele Canyon High School safety Chanceller James has had no problem naming Boise State as the leader in his recruitment. As his senior year approaches, the Broncos still remain in the driver's seat, but it appears that schools are making up ground.

"Recruiting is going well right now, I have a bunch of schools looking at me," James said. "I am interested in all of them, but right now I have a top five of Boise State, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and San Diego State."

One of those schools making up ground, and which may have even pulled even with BSU is Arizona, where the 6-foot-1, 195-pound defensive back camped earlier this summer.

"Boise State is still leading right now," James said. "Arizona is right up there with them. I camped at Arizona earlier this summer. I really like Arizona, I could picture myself going there.

"Boise State has just been with me from so long, but so has Arizona. I actually can't tell the difference right now, so I don't know what I'm going to do."

During his time in Tucson, James was able to take in all that Arizona has to offer.

"When I was on campus I liked that all of the coaches were nice to me," James said. "I had a lot of fun riding around and looking at the dorms and stuff. I looked at the campus and I also looked at how they're going to re-do their facilities and I really liked that. I saw all of the practice fields and where they go for spring ball and I really liked it."

Recruiting the three-star, 76th ranked safety in the class of 2012 for Arizona is special teams coordinator Jeff Hammerschmidt, who has developed a solid relationship with the prospect from the Golden State.

"I'm being recruited by coach Hammerschmidt," James said. "I really like coach Hammer, he's a great guy. I have fun every time I talk to him, and I think if I went to Arizona he would still be like a father to me."

Up next for James is a pair of trips to Boise and back to Tucson, where he'll be evaluating each school based on specific criteria.

"I haven't taken any other visits than Arizona, but I'll be going to Boise next week," James said. "There's a chance that I might commit on the visit, but I'm still going to try to take a visit to Arizona right after that.

"I'll look at the practice and how the coaches coach and how I'd fit into the defensive scheme. Also I'll go look at the dorms, and I'll talk to some teachers and look at the classes and look at the teacher-student relationship."

With the possibility of a pledge coming on one of his visits, it's no surprise that James is very close to a decision.

"My decision will be pretty soon," James said. "I'll probably end up making my decision before my season starts."
